Etymology

In summary

From Middle Dutch geburen, from Old Dutch geburien (“to happen, occur”), from Proto-West Germanic *gaburjan, from Proto-Germanic *gaburjaną. Equivalent to ge- + beuren. Cognate with West Frisian barre (“to happen”) and German gebühren (“to be due, owed”); further with Low German geböhren and Old English ġebyrian, which show both of these senses.
