Borrowed directly from Latin medius (“half”) rather than inherited through an Old Spanish form, possibly because the likely forms *meo and *meyo would have closely resembled mear (“to piss”), ultimately from Proto-Italic *meðjos, from Proto-Indo-European *médʰyos (“between”).
