Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish گوتورمك (götürmek, “to carry, take away”), from Old Turkic 𐰚𐰇𐱅𐰇𐰼 (kötür-, “to raise, lift”), causative of köt- (compare göt (“ass, buttocks”)), from Proto-Turkic *köt- (“to rise, to raise; high, elevated”) (compare Yakut көт (köt, “to fly”)). Cognate with Azerbaijani götürmək (“to take, pick up”), Kazakh көтеру (köteru, “to lift, raise”), Kyrgyz көтөрүү (kötörüü, “to rise”), Turkmen götermek (“to lift, pick up”), Tuvan көдүрер (ködürer, “to pick, rise”) Uyghur كۆتەرمەك (kötermek, “to pick, raise”), Uzbek ko'tarmoq (“to raise, heighten”). Compare kaldırmak for a similar semantic change towards “to put away, take away” from “to rise”.
