From Old Galician-Portuguese muller, moller (hence also Galician muller), from Latin mulierem (“woman; wife”), of uncertain origin. Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *h₂melǵ- (milk; to milk). Cognate with Spanish mujer, Catalan muller, Italian moglie, and Romanian muiere.
