Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese chão (“ground”), from Latin plānum (“level ground”) < plānus, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“flat”). Compare Galician chan and Spanish llano. Doublet of plano, porão, piano, and flete.
