Etymology

In summary

From Middle Dutch sien, from Old Dutch sian, from Frankish *sehan, from Proto-West Germanic *sehwan, from Proto-Germanic *sehwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *sekŹ·- (ā€œto see, noticeā€). Originally a class 5 strong verb, but the Germanic *h was lost from the infinitive and present tense forms through syncope in Old Dutch. However, it alternated with *g in the past tense through Grammatischer Wechsel, and this remained.
