From Middle Dutch wijc, from Old Dutch *wīk, from Proto-West Germanic *wīk, from Latin vīcus (“hamlet, village, neighborhood”), from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱ- (“village, household”). Cognate with English wick, -wich, -wick, German Weich- in dated Weichbild (“municipal area”). Compare Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌷𐍃 (weihs), from Proto-Germanic *wīhsą (“village, settlement”) of the same Proto-Indo-European root.
