From Middle Dutch buurt (“district”) (also buyrte) [15th century], from ghebuerte (“surroundings”) [c. 1290] and gebuerde (“zone”) [c. 1240], related to Old High German giburida and German Börde. Akin to West Frisian buert. See also gebied and Belgian Dutch synonym gebuurte.
