Borrowed from Medieval Latin executāre, from exsecūtus, perfect passive participle of exsequor, from ex- (“out”) + sequor (“to follow”). Ex- becomes ej- in Spanish orthography. Cognate with Portuguese executar, French exécuter, English execute, Italian eseguire.
