From Middle High German kástel (“fortified castle, city”), from Old High German kastel, and its doublet Middle High German kastḗl (“castle”), from Middle Dutch casteel, from Picardian Old French castel. Both ultimately from Latin castellum, which also directly influenced the modern form and sense.
