Etymology

Synchronically analyzable as derived from the active participle of تَجَرَ (tajara, “to trade, to conduct commerce”) from the root ت ج ر (t j r). Diachronically, however, presumably a borrowing of the noun of Classical Syriac ܬܓܪܐ (taggārā); perhaps it was loaned as تُجَّار (tujjār), which was then analyzed as a plural in order for a singular تَاجِر (tājir) to be derived by back-formation. The Syriac descends through a form *tangār from Akkadian 𒁮𒃼 (tamkārum, “trader”) derived from the root which is in Arabic م ك ر (m k r) related to scheming. Doublet of مَاكِر (mākir, “planner, schemer”).
