Assuming that anco represents the original form, likely a rebracketing of ancora as anc'ora. A borrowing from Old Occitan ancui (“on this day”) has also been suggested, but this would explain neither the stress position of anche, nor the lack of a final -ui (an acceptable ending in Italian; cf. lui).
