Etymology

In summary

From Ottoman Turkish سرمك (sermek), from Proto-Turkic *ser- (“to endure, be patient; to spread”). Some linguists express their doubts about connection of Old Turkic and modern Turkic forms, however according to Starostin the meanings are unitable within a trans.-intrans. opposition ("spread" - "to be spread > remain"). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (ser-, “to endure, be patient”), Turkmen sermek (“to spread out”), Azerbaijani sərmək.
