From Ottoman Turkish اكشی (ekşi, “an acid; sour substance, sour, acidic”), derived from Proto-Turkic *ekši- (“to be sour”), whence ekşi- (“to be sour”). Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (ekşig, “sour”), Chagatai [script needed] (ekşi, “sour”), Chuvash йӗксӳ (jĕksü, “bitterness”).
