Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese igreja, from Latin ecclēsia (“church”), from Ancient Greek ἐκκλησία (ekklēsía, “congregation”). Cognate with Galician igrexa, Spanish iglesia Catalan església, Occitan glèisa, French église, and Italian chiesa. Doublet of eclésia, a borrowing.
