From Old Galician-Portuguese ermida, hermida, from Ecclesiastical Latin and Late Latin erēmīta, from Ancient Greek ἐρημίτης (erēmítēs), from ἔρημος (érēmos, “solitary”). Cognate with Galician ermida, Spanish and Catalan ermita.
