From a- + Old Galician-Portuguese repender, repeender, from Early Medieval Latin repoenitēre, from Latin paenitēre. Suffixation perhaps to avoid confusion with the unrelated Portuguese pender (“hang”). Compare Galician arrepender, Spanish arrepentirse.
