Etymology

From a- + Old Spanish repentirse, from Vulgar Latin *repaenitīre, from Late Latin paenitīre, from Classical Latin paenitēre. The Old Spanish form with /t/ appears to have been influenced by Old French repentir or, less likely, Latin. The expected outcome with voiced /d/, namely rependirse, is also attested. Compare Galician arrepentir, Portuguese arrepender.
