From Middle Dutch *sacken, from Old Dutch *sackon, from Proto-Germanic *sakkōną, further etymology unknown, perhaps from a denasalized derivative of *sinkwaną (“to sink”); compare English sag. According to Kluge, related to zak (“sack”). Found natively only in the West Germanic languages.
