  2. (transitive) to flatter, to pander
  3. (transitive) to coddle, to spoil

Pronounced as (IPA)
/ˈtru.tə.lə(n)/
Etymology

First attested in 1515. Frequentative in -elen to an otherwise unattested verb *troeten which, given its initial t- (reflecting the High German consonant shift), is taken to be derived from Middle High German triuten. Ultimately a verbal formation based on Proto-Germanic *drūdaz (“dear, beloved”), an adjective attested in Middle High German trūt (German traut), Old Dutch drūt, Old English drūt and further afield also in Medieval Latin drūdus (Italian drudo), which represents an early borrowing from Germanic.
