Possibly shortened from earlier *jurreken (compare English jerkin), assimilated from *jurneken, from Middle Dutch jo(u)rney, journede (“surcoat”), from Old French journée, formed from jor (“day (of the tournament)”), with the suffix -ade (“at, from or before”). In the sense 'clothing' first found in 1691. In the 19th century the meaning shifted from children's to women's clothing.
