Etymology

Borrowed directly from Latin toga, from tegō (“I clothe”). Doublet of toge. The Philippine sense is due to the resemblance of the white ceremonial gowns worn by graduates of institutions to the loose outer garment worn by the citizens of Ancient Rome.
