From Middle Dutch huken, possibly by metathesis from a form *huck(e)ren, frequentative of hucken (“to crouch”). Of obscure ultimate origin, but perhaps from the root of words like hoog (“high”), heup (“hip”), heuvel (“hill”), or ultimately related to Proto-Indo-European *gew- (“to bend, curve”), similar to Ancient Greek γυρός (gurós, “round”).
