From Middle Dutch duchtich, from Old Dutch *duhtig, from Proto-West Germanic *duhtīg. Equivalent to modern deugen (“to be virtuous”) + -ig. Originally an adjective, but chiefly used as an adverb in modern Dutch. Cognate with German tüchtig (“efficient, capable, hard, competent, big”), English doughty, Danish dygtig (“virtuous, proficient”).
