From Proto-Indo-European *serḱ- (“to mend, make good”), whence also sarcina (“bag; burden”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἕρκος (hérkos, “wall, enclosure, defense”), ὅρκος (hórkos), ἑρκάνη (herkánē), ὁρκάνη (horkánē), Hittite [script needed] (šar-nin-k-, “to recompense”).
