Etymology
By rhotacism from Proto-Italic *nomezos, from Proto-Indo-European *nem- (“to assign, allot; take”). Cognate with Ancient Greek νέμω (némō, “to distribute”), Gothic 𐌽𐌹𐌼𐌰𐌽 (niman, “to take”), Latvian ņemt (“to take”) and Old Irish nem (“gift”). The grammatical sense is a semantic loan from Ancient Greek ἀριθμός (arithmós).
