Etymology

Inherited from Vulgar Latin root *volta, from *volŭta (perhaps via *volvita (“a turn”)), from the feminine form of Latin volūtus, perfect passive participle of volvō. Also possibly from the past participle of volgere (volto), or from the verb voltare. Compare Spanish vuelta; cf. also Spanish bóveda, French voûte. Cognate with Sicilian vota.
