Borrowed from Medieval Latin lampreda, of uncertain origin: possibly from Late Latin lampetra, from a combination of Latin lambere (“lick”) + petra (“stone”). Compare Spanish lamprea, French lamproie, Portuguese lampreia. However see also Gaulish naupreda.
