In summary

From Old French lamproie, from Medieval Latin lamprēda, of uncertain origin: possibly from Late Latin lampetra, from a combination of lambō (“lick”) + petra (“stone”). Compare Spanish lamprea, Italian lampreda, Portuguese lampreia. However, see also Gaulish naupreda; naupreda is attested in the 5th century via Polemius Silvius.
