Etymology

Of uncertain origin. One possible etymon is Old Italian cazza (“ladle”), from Late Latin cattiam, in turn from Ancient Greek κυάθιον (kuáthion), diminutive form of κύαθος (kúathos, “ladle for wine”); cf. also cazzuola. Another is Byzantine Greek ἀκάτιον (akátion, “mainmast”). See also caspita.
