From Middle High German swanz, from swanzen (“to swing”), derived from swanken, whence modern German schwanken (“to wobble”). Compare also Middle Low German swansen, swensen (“to skip, dance, strut, twirl”). Cognate of Yiddish שװאַנץ (shvants).
