Inherited from Middle French salle, from Old French sale (“a large room, large reception hall”), from Frankish *sal (“dwelling, house, entrance hall”), from Proto-Germanic *salą (“dwelling, house, hall”), from Proto-Indo-European *sel- (“human settlement, village, dwelling”).
