Inherited from Latin lupus, which was borrowed from an Oscan-Umbrian language, from Proto-Italic *luk史os, metathesis of Proto-Indo-European *w暮胎k史os. Doublet of lupus and Lope, the former a learned borrowing from Latin, the latter a proper name borrowed via Basque. Romance cognates include French loup, Italian lupo, Galician and Portuguese lobo, Romanian lup.
