Inherited from Vulgar Latin *cova, from covus, alternative form of Latin cavus (or from a variant of Late Latin cava, from cavum, cavus), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱówHwos (“cavity”). Compare Portuguese cova. Not related to English cove, despite the similarity in meaning.
