Etymology

According to Kluge, from Büffel (“buffalo”), from its use as a working animal. Pfeifer considers it to have originally been an intensive form of büffen (“to puff, to push”), obsolete alternative form of puffen, with the meaning gained by folk-etymological association with Büffel.
