Inherited from Old Catalan sang~sanch, from Vulgar Latin sanguem, alteration of Classical Latin sanguinem, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁sh₂-én-, oblique stem of *h₁ésh₂r̥ (“blood”). Its gender could also be masculine in Old Catalan, as it was in Latin. Compare Occitan sang, French sang, Sicilian sangu.
