Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *šaḥ(a)r- (“dawn, morning”). Cognate with Akkadian 𒀉𒄘𒍣𒂵 (šērum), Hebrew שַׁחַר (šáḥar, “dawn”) and Ugaritic 𐎌𐎈𐎗 (šḥr, “dawn; tomorrow, the future”); see Canaanite deity Shahar.
