In summary

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قادین (kadın), from Proto-Common Turkic *xātun (“queen, lady”), most likely from Sogdian [script needed] (γwtʾynh /xwatēn, xutēn/, “queen”). Akin to Old Turkic 𐰴𐱃𐰆𐰣 (qatun, “queen”), Karakhanid قاتُونْ (qātūn, “noble woman”), Yakut хотун (qotun). Compare hatun, a reborrowing of the same term from Persian.
