Etymologie (Englisch)
In summary
From Middle English bred, breed, from Old English brÄad (âfragment, bit, morsel, crumb", also "breadâ), from Proto-West Germanic *braud, from Proto-Germanic *braudÄ (âcooked food, leavened breadâ), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerw-, *bʰrew- (âto boil, seetheâ) (see brew). Alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *braudaz, *brauĂžaz (âbroken piece, fragmentâ), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰera- (âto split, beat, hew, struggleâ) (see brittle). Perhaps a conflation of the two. Possibly a doublet of broa. Cognate with Scots breid (âbreadâ), North Frisian bruad, Bruar, brßßdj (âbreadâ), Saterland Frisian Brood (âbreadâ), West Frisian brea (âbreadâ), Cimbrian proat, pròat (âbreadâ), Dutch brood (âbreadâ), German Brot (âbreadâ), Luxembourgish Brout (âbreadâ), Mòcheno proat (âbreadâ), Vilamovian brĹŤt (âbread; loafâ), Yiddish ×ר××× (broyt, âbreadâ), Danish, Norwegian BokmĂĽl and Norwegian Nynorsk brød (âbreadâ), Elfdalian broð (âbreadâ), Faroese breyð (âbreadâ), Icelandic brauð (âbreadâ), Swedish brĂśd (âbreadâ), Crimean Gothic broe (âbreadâ), Albanian brydh (âI make crumbly, friable, softâ), Latin frustum (âcrumbâ). Eclipsed non-native Middle English payn (âbreadâ), borrowed from Old French pain (âbreadâ). In this sense, mostly replaced loaf, which had been the more common term in Old English (see hlaf), a process which similarly occured in other languages such as German.
