From a Vulgar Latin *dadu, of uncertain origin; perhaps from Arabic أَعْدَاد (ʔaʕdād, “numbers”), or alternatively from Latin dātum. Compare Portuguese dado, Catalan dau, Italian dado. Cf. also French dé.
