Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ایشق (ışık, “light”), from Proto-Turkic *yạĺčuk (“light, sun”), from *yạĺču- (“to shine on”), equivalent to ışı- + -k. Cognate with Azerbaijani işıq (“light”), Turkmen yşyk (“light”).
