From Ottoman Turkish چوجق (çocuk, “pigling; child”), from Proto-Turkic *čōč- (“child; young pig”); from which also *čōčka (“pig”). Cognate with Azerbaijani çocuq (“child”), Uzbek jujuq (“small child”), Turkmen jōjuk (“piglet”), Old Turkic 𐰲𐰆𐰲𐰹 (čočuk, “piglet?”).
