Etymology
In summary
From Ottoman Turkish یلدرم (yıldırım, “thunderbolt”). Earliest attested in Kipchak records in 1312 as یولدوروم (yuldurum, “spark”) together with the deriving stem [script needed] (yuldura-, “to shine”), also Ottoman Turkish یلدرامق (yıldıramak, “to flash, gleam, glitter”). Equivalent to یلدرا (yıldıra-, “to flash”) + ـم (-ım, “noun forming suffix”). Cognate with Azerbaijani ildırım (“lightning, thunder”), Turkmen ýyldyrym (“lightning, thunder”). Akin to Karakhanid [script needed] (yuldrık, “sparkling, shining”) from [script needed] (yuldramāk, “to shine”) and Turkmen ýaldyramak (“to shine”).
