From Ottoman Turkish ییلان (yılan, “snake”), from Proto-Turkic *yï̄lan (“snake”), equivalent to Proto-Turkic *yï̄l- (“to creep”) + -lan (“suffix denoting a wild, predatory animal”). Compare aslan (“lion”), kaplan (“tiger”), sırtlan (“hyena”). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰖𐰃𐰞𐰣 (yılan, “snake”).
