Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طورپ (turp, “radish”), from Proto-Turkic *turp (“radish”). Analyzable as durmak + -ip, a suffix present in select words (see alp, çöp.) Cognate with Kyrgyz турп (turp, “radish”), Azerbaijani turp (“radish”), Turkmen turp (“radish”), etc. Compare also Hungarian torma (“horseradish”), Persian ترب (torob, “radish”), Turkic borrowings.
