Inherited from Ottoman Turkish تحكیم (taḥkim, “a reining, holding in, restraining, restraint, control, an appointing judge or arbiter, (theology) an asserting that judgment belongs to God alone and consequently refusing to acknowledge judges appointed by the Caliph Ali”), from Arabic تَحْكِيم (taḥkīm, “arbitration”), verbal noun of حَكَّمَ (ḥakkama, “to appoint as a judge or governor, to bid to give full judgment, to give full powers”).
