From Ottoman Turkish صیغنمق (sıġınmaḳ, “to squeeze one's self into a narrow place, to take shelter in, to take refuge with”), from Ottoman Turkish صیغمق (sıġmaḳ, “to go in to be held and contained in a space or place”), from Proto-Turkic *sıġ- (“to fit, to conform by being squeezed”), morphologically sığ- + -ın + -tı.
