From Ottoman Turkish سرین (serin, “cool, cold, chilly”), from Proto-Mongolic *serixün (“cool, fresh”). Cognate with Kyrgyz салқын, Kyrgyz салкын (salkın), Shor сеpён, Tatar салкын (salkın), Turkmen sergin, salkyn, Tuvan сериин (seriin, “cold”).
