Inherited from Ottoman Turkish محبوس (mahbus, “imprisoned, a prisoner, given in mortmain for the service of God”), from Arabic مَحْبُوس (maḥbūs), passive participle of حَبَسَ (ḥabasa, “to imprison, to hold back”).
