Etymology

In summary

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish معدنوز (maydanoz), a medieval borrowing from Arabic مَعْدُونِس (maʕdūnis), from Byzantine Greek μακεδονήσιον (makedonḗsion, “parsley”). Doublet of bahteniz and bahdeniz, reborrowings found in southeastern dialects from the later Arabic form بَقْدُونِس (baqdūnis), and of Makedonya.
